How to Lock the Ball Valves on the DICE™ Chemical Dosing Modules DS or DM

How to lock the DICE™ Dosing Module in a Few Step

In the video, we show an exemplary lockout of the injection outlet ball valve, in the closed position.

As a start, close the injection ball valve or make sure it is in the closed position. Then, you have to insert the lockout cable into the valve handle lockout hole as shown in the following illustration. 

The ball valve is now locked in the closed position. The only step left is to use the cable locking device to secure the cable, and insert your personal lock in place.

When you are ready to unlock the injection outlet ball valve, simply remove the cable locking device and pull the cable out.

The same procedure applies for any DICE™ ball valves equipped with the lockout option. The DICE™ configuration allows you to lock the valve in either the opened or closed position.

How to Perform a Pump Calibration Using a DICE™ Chemical Dosing Modules DS

A pump calibration can be performed to calibrate the pump with proper operating conditions or to troubleshoot the dosing system. Calibrating the pump using the DICE™ chemical dosing module DS is a simple and safe procedure that does not require any tools.

Understanding Pump Calibrations

Proper Operating Conditions

The DICE™ configuration allows the pump to be calibrated with the proper operating conditions.

During the calibration, the dosing pump sees the actual suction pressure (dependant on the tank level) and the correct discharge pressure maintained by the back pressure valve.

Troubleshooting the System

The pump calibration can also be done to troubleshoot the dosing system. It allows the operator to quickly validate that the system is operating properly and that the fluid is flowing from the chemical tank to the back pressure valve outlet.

If there is an issue with the injection line or the injection quill, the problem can be located quickly and corrected to ensure an optimal operation of the dosing system. 

Calibrating the Dosing Pump

Prior to performing the pump calibration, the pressure relief valve and the back pressure valve should be adjusted. Refer to the DICE™ DS installation and setup video.

To perform a pump calibration, the first step is to close the injection outlet ball valve and to open the calibration cylinder ball valve (make sure the evacuation valve is in the closed position). The following illustration shows how the valves should be set for the calibration.

Start the pump and fill the calibration column to its first measurement line. Then, start the calibration sequence by filling the calibration column while measuring the time and volume (refer to your dosing pump manufacturer calibration sequence).

Once the pump calibration is complete, simply close the calibration column and the evacuation ball valve. Reopen the injection ball valve.

The ball valves should now be in the same position than before the pump calibration. The system is now ready to operate.

How to Install, Setup and Adjust the DICE™ Chemical Dosing Modules DS and DM

The DICE™ chemical dosing modules are designed to be simple and quick to install and setup. The installation, setup and adjustment can be done in less than 15 minutes, and no specific tools are required.This demonstration was made using a DICE™ model DS, but the same installation procedure applies to the DICE™ model DM.

The installation of the Module in Two Steps

The DICE™ dosing module installation consists of only two steps:

  1. Mounting the DICE™ module in place
  2. Connecting the DICE™ module

There are various ways to install and integrate the DICETM dosing module into your chemical dosing system. It greatly depends on your application but the same presented procedures apply. The ordered model number reflects the chosen connector configuration, the pressure rating, and the material configuration.

In this demonstration, we installed the DICE™ in its simplest configuration: a suction lift application with one dosing pump and one calibration column.

Rigid piping, tubing (including PFA piping) can be used to connect the DICE™ dosing module with the pump, components, return line and the process.

Mounting the DICE™ in place

The first step is to mount the DICE™ dosing module in place. The module can be supported in different ways using the three mounting holes. In this example, the dosing module is mounted on a Peabody shelf.  Simply use the supplied fasteners to secure the DICE™ dosing module in place.

Once the DICE™ module is supported proceed with the piping/tubing installation.

Connecting the module – Simplex Configuration

For the presented configuration, the installation requires four connections on the module:

  1. Connection to the chemical dosing pump
  2. Connection for the tank return line
  3. Connection to the calibration column
  4. Connection to the process outlet
  1. The connection of the dosing pump can be done by cutting and installing a flexible tube between the pump outlet and the DICE™ inlet as shown. The connection is made using the supplied ferrule type hose connector.

 

  1. The tank return line in our exemplary installation was made using a flexible tube to connect the DICE™ evacuation outlet port and routed back into the chemical tank.

 

  1. The calibration column is mounted and connected directly to the DICE™ dosing module using the supplied male NPT connector.

 

  1. The connection to the process outlet line is made using flexible tubing and the supplied flexible tube connector.

Connecting the module – Duplex Configuration

The DICE™ DS and DM modules are equipped with three auxiliary ports on the side that can be used for secondary pumps or for additional accessories such as a pulsation dampener or a pressure transmitter.

In this demonstration, we installed a secondary pump on one of the auxiliary ports to configure the system in a duplex configuration. Additional check valves may also be integrated in the duplex configuration to allow for 100% pump redundancy.

To connect the secondary pump, start by removing the cap on the bottom auxiliary port. Depending on your installation, a variety of connection types could be supplied. For this demonstration, we installed our ferrule type hose connector.

Then, install the connecting hose from the secondary pump outlet to the DICE™ auxiliary port.

The Setup and Adjustment

Once the DICE™ chemical dosing module is installed and connected, it only takes a few minutes to perform its setup and adjustment.

This procedure consists in two simple steps:

  1. adjusting the pressure relief valve set point;
  2. adjusting the back pressure valve set point.

Start by completely screwing the back pressure valve adjustment screw and by closing all the DICETM ball valves. Start the dosing pump and wait until the fluid starts flowing through the pressure relief valve.

  1. Adjust the pressure relief valve set point using its adjustment screw. For this demonstration, the set point is 100 psi.
  1. Adjust the back pressure valve set point by opening the injection outlet ball valve and by unscrewing its adjustment screw. In the case of this demonstration, the set point is 70 psi.

To complete the setup, simply torque the counter nut on both the back pressure valve and the pressure relief valve. The back pressure is now set to 70 psi and the pressure relief to 100 psi.

Your DICE™ chemical dosing module is fully setup and ready to operate.

How to Install, Setup and Adjust the DICE™ Chemical Dosing Modules ES

The installation and the setup of the DICE™ chemical dosing modules are quick and simple. Installing the DICE™ ES can be done in less than 15 minutes and it does not require any specific tools.

Installing the DICE™ in Two Simple Steps

The DICE™ dosing module installation can be accomplished in two steps: the DICE™ support installation and the tubing connections.

There is more than one way to install and integrate the DICE™  ES on your dosing pump. It depends on your application, but it is the same procedure. The ordered model number reflects the chosen connector configuration, the pressure rating, and the material configuration.

Installing the DICE™ Support

The first step is to install the DICE™ support. To proceed, you need to use the upper bracket, the lower bracket, the two tabs and the two sets of mounting screws.

Start by installing the upper bracket on the DICE™ module using the two mounting screws. Make sure to install it on the bottom face of the module, the bracket facing the back (refer to the video if unclear).

Install the two linked plates on the DICE™ using two mounting screws. Insert the two linked plates bottom portion into the upper bracket grooves as shown in the following illustration. The recommended torque to be applied is 60 oz-in.

Assemble the upper bracket on the lower bracket using the four remaining mounting screws. However, make sure not to completely tighten the screws. This will allow the brackets to slide and adjust for final height later.

When the DICE™ support is completed, install the back pressure valve and the pressure relief valve adjustment screws. Then, install the supplied pressure gauge and isolator on the front of the DICE™ dosing module.

The Tubing Connections

Install the supplied ferrule connectors on the three following ports: on the top, on the bottom, and on the back. Firmly tighten them. The connectors should be hand tighten or with a maximum torque of 20 in-lb.

Note:

Make sure to install the ferrule connectors on the correct side. If the connector is not held properly once you screwed it in place, reverse it. Screw the opposite side of the connector into the DICE™ module. The connector should now be sturdy and well supported.

Now that the connectors are installed, proceed with the following connections: the dosing pump, the process outlet line, the tank return line and the pump inlet.

  1. Before mounting the dosing pump, secure the lower bracket in place by using the lower bracket mounting holes.

    To connect the pump to the DICE™ dosing unit, simply cut a short piece of tubing and use the supplied ferrule kits to proceed with the connection.

    Lift the module at the correct height, and install the hose on the pump outlet and the DICE™ inlet. You can now adjust the final bracket height and tighten the four assembly screws.

  2. For the process outlet line, install the injection tubing on the DICE™ outlet using the supplied ferrule connector.

  3. For the tank return line, connect directly the tank return line on the supplied ferrule connector.


Optional: Tank return line with elbow

If required, the tank return port located on the back of the DICE™ ES can be equipped with a preassembled elbow and hose connector.

The exemplary preassembled elbow is made using the same supplied DICE™ connector which has a 1/2” NPT Male end, a 90 degrees elbow with female NPT connections and a hose connector. This assembly can be supplied if requested.

In this optional case, the tank return line will be connected directly on the preassembled elbow and hose connector.

The installation should look like the following illustration.

4. Install the pump inlet tubing using its ferrule connector.

Once you completed the installation, proceed with the setup and adjustment.

Please note that the DICE™ ES can also be supplied with a wall mount bracket. The installation procedure follows the same guidelines.

The Setup and Adjustment

The DICE™ chemical dosing module ES setup and adjustment requires two simple steps:

  1. adjusting the pressure relief valve set point;
  2. adjusting the back pressure valve set point.

It can be accomplished in a few minutes. 

To begin, completely screw the back pressure valve adjustment screw. Then, start the dosing pump and wait until the fluid starts flowing through the pressure relief valve.

  1. Adjust the pressure relief valve set point using its adjustment screw. For this demonstration, the set point is 100 psi.

  2. If your system is equipped with an injection outlet isolation valve, open it. Then, adjust the back pressure valve set point using its adjustment screw. For this demonstration, the set point is 70 psi.


To complete the setup, simply torque the counter nut on both the back pressure valve and the pressure relief valve. The back pressure is now set to 70 psi and the pressure relief to 100 psi.

Then, your DICE™ chemical dosing module is fully setup and ready to operate efficiently.

What Types of Pumps Can Be Integrated With the DICE™?​

The DICE™ chemical dosing modules are designed to be integrated with various dosing pump types. The typical installation is with a diaphragm dosing pump, but it can also be integrated with progressive cavity pumps, like for polymer applications, with peristaltic pumps, gear pumps and vane pumps.

Diaphragm Spring Loaded Valve

The only difference in the DICE™ integration is the diaphragm spring loaded set point. The DICE™ is equipped with a diaphragm spring loaded valve that serves three purposes.

1. A Back Pressure Maintaining Valve

For diaphragm dosing pumps, the valve maintains a constant discharge pressure, allowing for precision and reliability. 

2. A Non Return Valve

The valve design allows for a great non return capability with an extremely efficient sealing. 

3. Anti-Siphon Valve

The spring loaded diaphragm valve also acts as a anti-siphon valve.

The Valve Set Point

Diaphragm Dosing Pumps

For a diaphragm dosing pump, the spring loaded valve should act as a back pressure valve. Therefore, the set point should be slightly higher than the process pressure.

Progressive Cavity Pumps, Gear Pumps & Vane Pumps

For these types of pumps, the valve set point should be lower than the process pressure. It allows the valve to have a minimal pressure loss during pump operating while acting as a check valve if required.

Peristaltic Pumps

Peristaltic pumps being sensitive to outlet pressure, it’s important not to uselessly increase the outlet pressure seen by the pump. Therefore, the set point should be lower than the process pressure.

Suction Lift vs Flooded Suction

Comparison between the DICE™ DS and the DICE™ DM

The DICE™ chemical dosing modules are available in two models with the calibration capability. We are talking about the DICE™ DS and the DICE™ DM.

They both have the same components: a back pressure valve, a pressure relief valve, a pressure gauge with an isolator, a bleed valve and three auxiliary ports (for a secondary pump or a pulsation dampener for example). Their normal operation is also the same. The chemical is pumped from the tank, through the DICE™, with the maintained pressured by the back pressure valve, and to the process.

In a few words, the difference between the two dosing modules is that one is designed for suction lift applications and the other for flooded suction application. The difference in the design of the two modules is the addition of a ball valve in the middle of the DICE™ DM module, used for calibration, as detailed below.

Suction Lift

An application with suction lift is defined by a tank fluid level that is lower than the pump inlet. Suction is required to draw fluid from the chemical tank. 

Both DICE™ DS and DM models are suited for suction lift applications.

Flooded Suction

An application with flooded suction is defined by a tank fluid level that is higher than the pump inlet. The pump inlet therefore has constant positive pressure.

Depending on the fluid level inside the tank you could either be in the presence of a flooded suction (example when the tank is full) or a suction lift (example when the tank is near empty).

The DICE™ DM is suited for flooded suction applications.

Emptying the Calibration Column

As mentioned, both models can be used to perform a pump calibration. How the calibration column is drained depends on the configuration.

After performing a pump calibration with a suction lift application, the column is emptied and sent back to the chemical tank located under the system, using gravity.

Since there’s a positive pressure at the pump suction for flooded suction application, we won’t be able to drain the calibration column content using gravity. The additional ball valve on the DICE™ DM allows the content of the calibration column to be drained with the pump. This configuration also allows doing a drawn down calibration of the pump if required.

The Pressure Relief

In the case of a blocked pipe, a blocked injection quill or simply a closed isolation valve, the pressure relief valve will open. It will cycle back the excess pump fluid to the chemical tank or directly to the pump suction depending on the configuration. This will prevent the system from over pressurizing.

With the DICE™ DS suction lift configuration, the pressure relief valve is routed back directly to the chemical tank.

Therefore, the excess pump fluid is cycled back to the tank.

With the DICE™ DM flooded suction configuration, the pressure relief valve can be routed and looped directly to the pump inlet. This allows the installation to only have one feed line coming from the storage tank.
